Description:  This entry represents the cation/H+ exchanger (CHX) family from plants. 28 Arabidopsis thaliana and 17 rice (Oryza sativa) CHX genes have been identified. They consist of an N-terminal hydrophobic transport domain and a C-terminal putative regulatory domain. Its N-terminal hydrophobic domain is similar to monovalent cation/proton antiporter-2 (CPA2) proteins, especially yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) Kha1 and Synechocystis NhaS4 []. Interestingly, 18 AtCHX genes are either pollen specific or pollen enhanced; they may have functions in pollen development, germination, and tube growth []. AtCHX21 and AtCHX23 act in potassium homeostasis within the female gametophyte [, ]. AtCHX21 may also play a role in regulation of xylem Na+ concentration and, consequently, Na+ accumulation in the leaf [].
