Protein Domain : IPR004921

Type:  Domain Name:  Terminase, large subunit
Description:  The terminase is a component of the molecular motor that translocates genomic DNA into empty capsids during DNA packaging []. The large subunit heterodimerises with the small terminase protein, which is docked on the capsid portal protein. The latter forms a ring through which genomic DNA is translocated into the capsid. The terminase protein may have or induce an endonuclease activity to cleave DNA after encapsidation. This entry represents a family of terminase large subunits found in a variety of the Caudovirales and prophage regions of bacterial genomes. Homologues are also found in Gene Transfer Agents (GTA) [], including ORFg2 (RCAP_rcc01683) of the GTA of Rhodobacter capsulatus(Rhodopseudomonas capsulata) [see Fig.1, in ]. Short Name:  Terminase_lsu
