Protein Domain : IPR029580

Type:  Family Name:  Prostaglandin G/H synthase 1
Description:  Prostaglandin G/H synthase 1 (COX-1) and synthase 2 (COX-2) convert arachidonate to prostaglandin H2 (PGH2), a committed step in prostanoid synthesis []. PGH2 is then metabolised to one of at least five bioactive prostaglandins, including PGE2, PGI2, PGF2alpha, PGD2, or thromboxane A2 (TxA2). These prostanoids have pleiotropic cardiovascular effects altering platelet and renal function, and acting either as vasodilators or vasoconstrictors []. COX-1 and COX-2 are the two cyclooxygenase isozymes targeted by the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) [, ].COX-1 (cyclooxygenase-1) is highly expressed in stomach and platelets, where it catalyses the arachidonic acid (AA) conversion into prostaglandins, which protect the gastrointestinal tract and modulate platelet function []. COX-1 may contribute to ovarian cancer development through stimulation of neovascularisation []. It is also involved in neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's [, ]. Short Name:  COX-1
