Protein Domain : IPR030461

Type:  Family Name:  Junction plakoglobin
Description:  Plakoglobin (gamma-catenin) is an armadillo repeat protein found in adherens junctions, where they interact with the cytoplasmic domain of classical cadherins and with alpha-catenin. It is also a structural constituent of desmosomes, where it binds to the cytoplasmic domains of the desmosomal cadherins, desmogleins and desmocollins []. It acts as a substrate for vascular endothelial protein tyrosine phosphatase (VE-PTP) and is required by it to stimulate vascular endothelial (VE)-cadherin function in endothelial cells. It can replace beta-catenin in E-cadherin/catenin adhesion complexes which are proposed to couple cadherins to the actin cytoskeleton [].Plakoglobin has multiple functions as a a cell adhesion molecule and may also have a role as transcriptional activator in Wnt signalling [, ]. Short Name:  Plakoglobin
