Description:  This entry represents the TatD deoxyribonuclease family, which includes TatD and many putative deoxyribonucleases. The family is related to a large superfamily of metalloenzymes []. TatD has been shown experimentally to be a DNase enzyme [].The Tat secretion pathway in bacteria exports folded proteins across the cytoplasmic membrane. TatD is not required for Tat export activity, but appears to be an essential part of a quality-control system linked to the Tat system [, ]. This quality control system prevents the export of misfolded proteins and initiates their degradation. The role that TatD plays in this system is not currently known. Purified TatD protein has DNase activity [], but this is thought to be separate from the protein's role in quality control. Short Name:  TatD_family
