Protein Domain : IPR013471

Type:  Family Name:  Ribonuclease Z/BN
Description:  This entry includes ribonuclease Z, ribonuclease BN and zinc phosphodiesterase ELAC protein 1. They are zinc phosphodiesterases that have functions in tRNA-3' processing. All tRNA molecules are synthesised as long precursors with extra sequence at both the 5' and 3' ends, which undergo several processing steps to form the mature tRNA molecule. In many bacteria the tRNA precursors do not contain the CCA sequence which forms the 3' end of the mature tRNA and is essential for aminoacylation. In these organisms ribonucleotide Z cleaves the precursor to form a 3' end to which CCA is added. Species where all tRNA sequences already have the CCA tail, such as Escherichia coli, do not generally posses ribonuclease Z. Instead, they have ribonuclease BN to deal with the CCA-less tRNAs []. Short Name:  RNase_Z/BN
