Type: | Family | Name: | Stromelysin 1 |
Description: | Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) degrade most components of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and process a number of bioactive molecules. This entry represents stromelysin-1. Stromelysin-1 (also known as MMP3) has a rather broad substrate specificity: it can degrade fibronectin, laminin, gelatins of type I, III, IV, and V; collagens III, IV, X, and IX, and cartilage proteoglycans. Besides degrading multiple ECM proteins, it can also activate growth factors, cleave cell adhesion molecules, chemokines, cytokines and various receptors. Stromelysin-1 is considered to play a central role in the activation of various proMMPs, including proMMP-1 (interstitial procollagenase), proMMP-7 and proMMP-9 (neutrophil procollagenase) []. It can contribute to several pathologies, such as cancer, asthma and rheumatoid arthritis []. | Short Name: | Stromelysin_1 |
