| Description: | Human cytomegalovirus(HHV-5) (Human herpesvirus 5) encodes several proteins that interfere with expression of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I and class II proteins. The unique short glycoprotein 2 (US2) is an early protein that binds to newly synthesized MHC class I heavy chains in the endoplasmic reticulum, redirecting them to the cytosol for proteasome-dependent destruction, thereby preventing their expression at the cell surface []. As a consequence, infected cells cannot be recognised by cytotoxic T lymphocytes.
